The ONLY thing on the top shelf was my Sony Bravia 40" LCD KDL-40EX400 which weighs in at 39lbs. A month ago, my friend and I were sitting and having a conversation and there was a sudden explosion-like sound and black glass chunks sprayed the entire room (there was no actual explosion, it was just the tempered glass giving in and shattering). It just gave out on its own, the tv wasn't even operating, and it sprayed glass a good 5 ft. Fortunately the TV survived, but my children and I are still getting glass slivers in our hands and feet because its seems this tempered glass is impossible to completely locate and pick up in carpet.
